At home with...Hunting for George

Come with us into the new home of Lucy Glade-Wright of Hunting for George – an '80s timber shack along Victoria’s Great Ocean Road. Lucy has given this spare room a welcome awakening with our Dulux Colour Forecast Restore palette. Find out how she went about this DIY transformation in just 48 hours. Colour featured: Dulux New Penny.

The transformation of this room uses the Dulux Colour Forecast Restore palette to create a completely new look and feel.

Can you tell us about the space you made over?

“This is one of the bedrooms in my new home along the Great Ocean Road. This house is an '80s timber shack with timber panelled, pitched ceilings throughout. We hadn’t done any renovations yet to the interior so this bedroom was still an empty shell. The room has only small east and west-facing windows that don’t allow for ample natural light throughout the day, so it was a bit dark and lifeless.”

What kind of mood has this new colour palette given to this space?

“This palette creates a calm, restorative mood and serves as more of a retreat than a bedroom. I was drawn to the earthy nature of the palette and loved both the strength and softness in each colour. It made me feel instantly at ease, which is why I naturally gravitated towards it. I love the warmth of Dulux New Penny on the walls and how it complements the richness in the timber panelling, removing the once stark contrast between wall and ceiling. This in turn has helped to create a more inclusive and inviting space.”

What other touches have you used in this space to complete the transformation?

“It was a flat and uninspiring room originally, so I wanted to bring more texture and depth to the interiors. I choose to build a nib wall to serve as a bed head and practical ledge for lighting, storage and styling. This helped to add visual interest to quite a flat open wall and the texture of the VJ panels on the nib wall served to complement the ceiling. The nib wall was finished with a solid piece of Tasmanian Oak sealed with Intergrain Ultraclear Satin, to again tie into the timber nature of the home.

"The other key elements of this transformation were the lighting and window furnishings. The lighting was important, not only for practical reasons but to create a warm and ambient mood. The curtains served to open up the space. I did this by making these wider and taller than the window frames in order to enhance the scale of the room and mask some old, tired windows.”

What are some of your top tips for other DIYers to help them replicate this look?

  1. “Embrace colour and don’t be afraid of it. The Dulux Restore feature colours are strong, yet soothing and provide the perfect base to easily complement with your desired furnishings.”

  2. “Simplicity is key. Keep your styling elements and decor to a minimum, allowing the colour space to breathe. Aim to complement, not compete.”

  3. "Layer textural elements to create an inviting interior. Choose objects and materials that have an organic, natural feel to them. A great way to do this is through bed linen and curtains, woven rugs and upholstered furniture, or handmade ceramics and artwork.”

What are some key considerations when selecting colours for walls, furnishings, and décor?

“I always make sure to view my desired paint colour in the room first before painting. Colour can vary depending on its environment, light and other primary elements in the room so it's important to make an educated decision based on this. When selecting colours for your additional furnishings and decor, stay within a similar colour palette and tone. The Dulux Restore palette works well with natural tones of nude, moss and warm timber accents.

"I was drawn to the earthy nature of the palette and loved both the strength and softness in each colour. It made me feel instantly at ease which is why I naturally gravitated towards it."

Any other tips you have for consumers looking to introduce the Restore palette into their own homes?

“This palette is all about nourishment of your senses and that shouldn’t stop with just the paint. Choose elements, objects, textures and tones that warm your soul and ignite your senses. The neutral base of the supplementary colours too in the Restore palette provide a lovely alternative to traditional whites and they have a depth to them that adds personality to any space. Muted neutrals always provide a strong base to work from and layering very similar nude and warm textures helps create a sensual, quiet interior.”

Explore the Dulux Colour Forecast 2022
